The 3nm process will have a density 1.7 times greater than 5nm, providing better performance and energy efficiency. However, TSMC faced some complications as it passed the risk production phase. TSMC is said to start mass-producing these chips sometime in the second half of 2022, which means the company is a few months behind in the manufacturing process. CC Wei, CEO of TSMC, attributes this to the complex nature of technology and the specific requirements of each of the different customers. This means that Intel will also suffer a slight delay until it has its own advanced semiconductor manufacturing up and running.
Rumors suggest that Intel will not use 3 million chips for its Alder Lake and Raptor Lake processors in the consumer market. Instead, the order from TSMC will be used to produce an advanced GPU model, possibly for graphics cards and server applications.
Intel is asking TSMC for a little help right now
While Intel eventually plans to have its own production facilities to manufacture chips with similar performance, it appears that it will use TSMC to obtain Advanced products such as GPUs In the market. It remains to be seen whether or not Intel will achieve its own goals for a better operation decade in the next several years, but the company appears confident about that. This is the current point right on time.
Intel’s purchase of the bulk of its 3nm chips could negatively impact Apple and AMD’s ability to secure new manufacturing technology in the future. However, TSMC plans to aggressively expand its operations to suit the high requirements of its customers which would help. Of course, this is just a rumor at this point, so take Intel’s large order of 3nm TSMC nodes with a pinch of salt for now.
