Take-Two says the all-new Gearbox franchise will be coming sometime before April 2022
Take-Two Interactive said yesterday that it plans to release it 62 games During fiscal year 2024, from “immersive core” games to indie games – though I’m not entirely clear about how a billion-dollar publisher could seriously claim to be rolling out indie games. Anyway, we’re left to guess what these games will actually be like, but Take-Two revealed that one of them would be something – something brand new, apparently – from Gearbox.
“2K will also introduce two versions of the new franchises this year, including a version of Gearbox,” said Karl Slatov, president of Take-Two, during the earnings call. Slatov was discussing Take-Two’s fiscal year 2022, which effectively ends March 31, 2022.
That’s, admittedly, very little going forward, but it comes less than two weeks after Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford Semi-teased Kind of activity on the Borderlands front – it might include, as he put it, “Borderlands Neighbor Games,” which could be seen as a nod to the new franchise that Slatoff has referred to.
Pitchford was similarly cautious in the wake of the Take-Two announcement, tweeting, ”Hmm …In response to a VCG report about the new franchise, it then suggested that Gearbox had already put ‘years of work’ into the project.
By “quickly” you mean “years of work”?May 19, 2021
Take-Two and Gearbox have a long-standing relationship – 2K Games published all the previous Borderlands, among others – but nonetheless, the partnership in a new series of sorts is a bit unexpected since Gearbox is now owned by the competing publisher Embracer Group She acquired the studio in February.
At the time, 2K Games said the new ownership would not have an effect on its role as publisher of Borderlands Games, “or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio.” Given Pitchford’s tweet indicating that this project is under development, I believe a deal with Take-Two was already in place at the time of the Embracer acquisition.
The Take-Two rep declined to comment further, but 2K Games would feature Geoff Keighley’s big tournament Summer Fest game, Which is scheduled for June 10. Perhaps we will learn more next.
