Outriders It’s the latest game to prevent players from pausing when they’re in single-player mode, a common annoyance familiar to players of Souls-likes, Action-RPGs, and any game-as-a-service that isn’t war. The thing is, you can actually pause Outriders when you play them alone. You just have to get to Nvidia’s Ansel, as he discovered it Aced-Bread Radiator.
Nvidia GPU owners will be familiar with GeForce Experience, the program that downloads driver updates and forgets your password. It also comes with a portrait mode called Ansel that you can enter into supported games by pressing Alt-F2, then zoom in on the free camera using post-processing filters, etc. Outriders are one of those supported toys and when you’re not excited you can use them to stop and finally go to the toilet, answer the door, leave the dog outside, care for loved ones, or whatever.
As Morgan wrote, Outriders is the newest game to remind us of magnitude Single player online only sucks. Frequent disconnection is a serious problem, but not having a pause button is also annoying since it’s a game designed to lack pauses or safe zones. The fact that Outriders is completely capable of pausing, but will only let you if you have a certain brand of graphics card, feels like rubbing salt into the wound.
