After years of kicking back softly, the Biomutant is almost here. The Biomutant Hypothesis, developed by new studio Experiment 101 and published by THQ Nordic, is interesting and amazing art. It’s an action RPG game, however With cats. Cats with swords, guns and kung fu skills. There aren’t enough games about badass cats, and I’m glad something has been done about it.
The biofactors videos didn’t appear often during the development process, but every time they did it seemed pretty ambitious. Experience 101 finally shared a new batch of gameplay clips and info in Summer 2020 as it nears final work on the game. Now, finally, we have a release date too.
Here’s everything we know about the Biomutant, from the earliest shows, the latest trailers, and how creating your own RPG cat hero works.
What is the release date of Biomutant?
Biomutant will be launched on May 25, 2021 in steam. It will also be available on PS4 and Xbox One.
Biomutant was originally set to be released sometime in 2019. Developers Experiment 101 Finally Updated Fans on Twitter On the state of the game in early 2020 saying that it “will reveal the release date as soon as everyone in our studio feels confident about reaching that date and that the game is ready for it.” Why the length of silence? So that they can Fix a bug without crushingStudio head Stefan Leungkvist explained.
Here are some videos of Biomutant’s gameplay
Summer Games 2020
A new batch of gameplay clips during the IGN summer event feature more combat and enemy combat. There are all sorts of big, responsible monsters and they all have bright fur and huge teeth. You can also define your character using several different types of vehicles: something of a submarine type, some sort of snowboarder, and a glider to fly through the air.
This part of Biomutant’s gameplay shows a lot of ground and mech fights. It’s interesting to see the game bounce between post-apocalyptic environmental undertones and whims (which the narrator picks up everywhere). It also starts with a look at the character’s creator, showing how messing around with your cat’s stats will change her looks, too.
What kind of game is Biomutant?
Developer Experiment 101 officially describes Biomutant as “a post-apocalyptic Kung-Fu fantasy RPG.” This is a mouthful, but it seems apt for the strange feelings that Biomutant puts off. From the limited gameplay we’ve seen, it’s essentially an action RPG with an ambitious “mutation” system that alters the genetic makeup of your cat-character over time.
There is also a deep crafting system for creating new weapons and armor. Gameplay demos so far have been somewhat linear, but Biomutant is an open world game with a 4×4 km sandbox, and does not include its underground areas.
What is the story of the Biomutant?
Biomutant contains a unique experience in post-apocalyptic worlds. Instead of your typical natural disaster, the Biomutant Realm was destroyed by a massive oil flood that rose from the ground.
Experiment 101 was wary about the story, but it confirmed that the choices your cat makes have a big impact on the story. With an oil plague afflicting the Tree of Life in an effort to revitalize the world, your job is to save it while uniting the world’s “tribes”.
The Tree of Life mission looks similar to Mass Effect 3’s “galactic preparation.” Treating each of the “roots” of the Tree of Life will increase your chance of saving the world at the end of the game.
Biomutant narrator talks about every character in the game
As far as we can tell, there is only one voice actor in the game – the narrator is omnipresent. Not only does it narrate the ongoing action of your hero, but it also expresses every conversation with the NPC. It’s almost like he’s reading dialogue from a fairy tale, which is kind of cool. There are many dialogue options in the chats, but we didn’t see them affect the gameplay.
Your custom cat build will influence her stats
At the start of Biomutant, players will tweak their cat’s protagonist’s genetic code to their liking – including strength, agility, liveliness, charisma, and intellect. Changing her in the character builder will drastically change the makeup of your cat. It can be short or long, orange or skinny, whatever you like. Statistics have a direct impact on things like weapon damage, persuasion, and movement speed.
Players will discover new physical and “psychological” abilities
The “mutated” part of Biomutant comes from your cat’s tendency to pick up new powers when exposed to wastelands after the end of the world. We’ve only seen quite a few powers so far – the telekinesis ability that allows you to cast small enemies at each other, the ability to stun enemies and force them to indiscriminately attack by swarming them into butterflies.
Play Biomutant combat as Devil May Cry
To sit with YouTube channel Radioactive games, Biomutant actors seem to have compared the fight to Devil May Cry, and it’s not hard to see the effect. Combat is a mixture of melee and ranged with the same locking style that DMC is known for. Melee is based on groups and crowd control.
You can make weapons from random pieces of scrap
Supplies in the open world can be used to create unique weapons. We’ve seen swords, sticks, rifles, and pistols so far. One sword may have a curved stop sign that reinforces the base while the other uses the monkey wrench as a grip. In the latest gameplay video, we also discovered a giant toothbrush.
Aura’s Biomutant System interacts with your loyalty
Your actions in the Biomutant will swing in the “karma” scale called Aura, back and forth between good and bad. By the end of the game, apparently, you will see a different ending depending on your karma.
In early 2021, Experience 101 demonstrated that it has greatly expanded the Biomutant script over the past year so that non-playable characters have a different dialogue depending on your alignment.
