Gameplay, features, games, specifications and more

Sony has been a professional player in the console department with the PlayStation 4 and the story doesn’t look very different with the PlayStation 5. Since the game console teaser came out, people have been waiting impatiently when they are able to. To get their hands on one of these. Well it’s here now and it piqued my interest. More than just the design, the gaming community is in awe of what the console has to offer in terms of its gameplay and that is precisely what got us to conclude about whether it will be able to live up to the delightful hype created around the console. We’ve had a PS5 for about 14 days and we really haven’t been able to delve into the intricate details about Sony’s flagship console, but we’ve got enough detail to help you make your final purchase decision. So is the general trend of “I want a PS5” just a thrill early on, or is it worth the effort? Let’s find out. Right off the bat, the PS5 is a massive piece of hardware that stands nearly 40 cm above the table top. The matte white plastic panels add to the overall appeal but are very difficult to clean. The digital version of the console weighs 3.6 kilograms, and the disc version weighs 4.5 kilograms.

The whole world was interested in the design when the company revealed it last year, however, there have been mixed reactions by people who have bought the PS5.

PlayStation 5

Undoubtedly, this is the most futuristic game console design, even better than the chicken-frying design that KFC offered for its console. It’s clear that with this kind of ostentatious design philosophy Sony has literally thrown minimalism out of the window with this.

It is made with multiple casings compared to the previous one which adds extra weight. You also get a detachable stand to keep the console horizontal. The two-tone design and sheer size of the controller make it stand out from any electronic device in your home.

Liked how the console lighting reflects off the fans. While using me, I could only see three colors, yellow, white, and blue. These are the same color accents carried over from the original PS4.

It is good if Sony provides the stand inside the box; Otherwise, placing it horizontally can be a problem for many. Although I would like to note that the mount does not stay in place if I move the console a lot. It’s not like you’ll do that often once you’ve set up the console.

The center portion of the PS5 is glossy black plastic that adds to the overall aesthetics but attracts a lot of small scratches. Standard white panels are an invitation to a lot of smudges and will get dirty. Therefore, I recommend removing the panels manually and customizing them just the way you want them. Yes, the white panels are removable, which does not nullify your controller warranty.

PlayStation 5 design

I really don’t like the materials used in the overall body, although the little logos infused into the plastic look great. Evidence that Sony’s innovation department has been busy last year.

For connectivity, you get a USB Type-A port and a Type-C port with the power button and eject button disguised in the glossy black bezel. You also get an ultra-premium Blu Ray optical drive, though the digital version misses the same thing. The back contains an HDMI port, two USB Type-A ports, an 8 power port, and an Ethernet port.

Performance and user interface

The user interface is completely new and takes advantage of a faster solid state drive. The current generation PS5 uses an x86-based CPU. In terms of processing power, it is powered by a 3.5GHz Ryzen 8-core processor and a dedicated RDNA 2 GPU at 2.23GHz.

It comes with 16GB of GDDR6 RAM along with 825GB of storage, however, only 667GB can be used. You also get an additional slot for an M.2 SSD expansion, but Sony hasn’t unlocked that feature yet. It gets support for Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and HDMI 2.1 for TVs that offer support for 4K content and a refresh rate of 120Hz.

It’s great that the PS5 is now moving to a solid-state storage drive that drastically boosts performance and load times. Reading time is also faster than the Xbox Series X. So, in terms of your journey from home screen to actual jumping around the build or just shooting the bad guy, the time will be much less – thanks to a faster SSD.

I managed to load from the main screen to the actual Spider-Man: Miles Morales gameplay in under 12 seconds. Even the loading time for a heavy game like Cyberpunk is much faster than for PS4.

Although no TV supports 120Hz refresh rate, we were able to play Spider-Man: Miles Morales with extreme performance with ray tracing. The gameplay is a visual pleasure and makes the overall gameplay even more immersive. The good thing is that you now don’t have to sacrifice your frame rates for visual accuracy. The PS5 packs enough power inside it so you can fulfill your maximum performance requirements without having to compromise on any department.

Heat management is a major aspect of the PS5 which is why it comes with a large fan, liquid metal cooling, and a massive heatsink. Even at the end of the 4-5 hour gaming session, the console didn’t turn into a large oven, which is usually the case with older generation consoles.

I wouldn’t say the console was totally quiet but even that minimal volume doesn’t spoil the deals.

In terms of UI, your games are now separated from streaming apps which I feel is a better way to do that. In general, the user interface is much cleaner, and with this new interface Sony wants users to focus more on the visual content rather than the text.

PlayStation-5 user interface

Setting up the device is easy and it even allows you to migrate some PS4 content with just a few simple steps. The home screen interface gets a new look despite approaching the familiar area by simply diving into the menus. What works against it are the smaller icons and thumbnails and because of that, you might miss some of the discounts and offers in the PS Plus Store; Started on the PS4 directly in your face.

One of the good things about PS5 is that you can access all of your PlayStation 4 content and even content on PlayStation Plus is now available on the home screen and you won’t have to wait for a separate interface to load. Quick access to your game library and other content is always a welcome addition.

The remaining options like Search, Settings, and your profile icon are now in the upper-right corner. You’ll end up using Control Center that gives you quick access to music, microphone, accessories, and game-switching options. The user interface has now introduced a new card-like feature. It’s mostly filled with game lessons, locked rewards, and other game content.

I was happy that backward compatibility wasn’t an issue as I can play most of the PS4 games in my library on the PS5. The only caveat? I was unable to use PS5 save games on my PS4. So, after my review unit came back, I had to play “Miles Morales” again to get to where I left off on PS5.

Game control experience

There’s a whole new world of haptic feedback that DualSense now offers. Not only do stimuli bring a decent amount of strong reactions, the vibrations have taken a whole new level. Sometimes, the players also repel each other in the opposite direction which brings an immersive gameplay experience.

I haven’t been able to try a lot of games with resistance reflexes, but Sony’s Astro BOT Rescue Mission (it’s free) is a good game to try if you really want to know what this console is capable of.

DualSense control feels like a bolder yet elegantly sophisticated avatar of the DualShock 4 controller. Most of the basics remain the same. You still have the touchpad, the share and options buttons, and most of the other buttons are the same. Except that it now has a glossy, glass-like finish.

The console is bigger than before and bigger compared to the previous generation. The gap that existed between the R1 and R2 buttons is now gone. On paper, the battery capacity has increased, and we agree with that. Not to mention, USB Type-C charging helps kill charging time.

There’s also a built-in microphone this time though, naturally, I’ve seen myself use the headphone microphone a lot. However, one must be careful while using the console as many may leave the microphone open during gameplay and not realize this. Save yourself a blush and turn off the feature in settings.

PS5 controller

There is no doubt that the new DualSense is more powerful and not cramped. The large console space might be a concern to some gamers because you’ve been using a more compact build so far, but rest assured it won’t take long to get used to the new console.

DualSense includes players that can be customized as a developer to send feedback. However, if the vibrations and feedback are overwhelming, you can always turn it off in the console settings. Some of the changes I’ve noticed are that now clicking the PS button on DualSense causes the Control Center to appear which takes you to options like your profile, power options, settings, and more. Long press takes you back to the home screen. This will take a while to get used to the old console compared to the older console since you are fighting around 7-8 years of muscle memory.

There is a huge jump in performance over the older generation controllers, but the company opted for more sensor-based experiences with DualSense.

How about gaming titles?

The upcoming PS5 library looks bright for the company with titles like Horizon Forbidden West, Far Cry 6, Pragmata, and even a new God of War 2: Ragnarok hitting the store this year. Not only that, but there is also a lot of other stuff Third-party games are coming to console, so there’s a lot to look forward to.

PlayStation 5

The good thing is the way the PS5 is set up because it provides backward compatibility with old PS4 games. This means I don’t have to wait for new PS5 titles to come out and I can go back to old titles and restart them. The good news is that games like God of War and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End look better visually.

Should you buy it?

The PS5 is an enhanced version of the older generation console when it comes to design and performance. Many would regard it as a seismic shift. Rest assured you will be lucky if you get your hands on one of these things because, as of now, they’re out of stock in most places. I still think you can wait a few more months for new PS5 titles before deciding to upgrade.

I loved playing the PS5 and it is really a breath of fresh air. I feel that at the moment it is the best gaming console that will make your gaming experience a visual pleasure and an immersive experience.

For new console buyers, you may consider buying the new PS5 as it really enters the world of next-gen gaming. The PS5 Blu-Ray variant is being sold at Rs 49,990 and the digital variant is at Rs 39,990.

In the last two weeks or so with the console, I’ve never had any issues or problems, but that’s something to imagine because many PS5 owners are reporting issues online. Most of the problems revolve around manipulation and I don’t want to go into that right now. I feel you can still be happy with the PS4 and not miss the PS5 because not many games have been released yet for the PS5. However, if you are looking to buy a new gaming console, the PS5 should be at the top of your list.

We’d like to remind you that the PS4 is currently available at a retail price that is half what the PS5 sells. Just think about that.
