Black Legend: Last year, Lukong’s trailer spread to gaming communities. This amazing looking game from a random Chinese developer – sure that was just a piece of marketing, or a trailer designed to attract some Kickstarter funding?
Well, the latest release of Black Myth: Wukong Trailer has released – and while it’s not an “official trailer” or whatever IGN might suggest – it does promise the game is still in development and the studio is currently hiring new developers.
The trailer focuses on the Chinese New Year (which starts in February) with multiple references to the enemies of the Mouse and the Bull. The end of the Year of the Rat and the transition to the Year of the Taurus.
Although it doesn’t offer many details about the expected time of release of a playable version of the game, it does enhance the look of this polished and cool game. As one YouTube commentator said, “It looks so good, I’m almost scared.”
There is reason to be concerned about the release of the game – this is still an unknown Chinese developer and serious project, with its looks. The graphics and gameplay look great, but even in the trailer there is evidence of screen tearing and low fps.
If you can put those worries aside and have some optimism about the game, Black Myth: Wukong looks a lot like Sekiro-esque / Souls games with a series of strange bosses of combat, inspired by Chinese mythology, like Wukong himself.
The Monkey King – known as Sun Wukong – is a character originally made famous from the Chinese novel of the 16th century. Journey to the West, But in modern culture it has appeared in film, television, and League of Legends.
Wukong is a powerful monkey blessed with heroic powers thanks to Taoist practices. He has immense strength, a host of special abilities, and can even carry entire Heavenly Mountains on his shoulders (there’s actually a glimpse of that in the new trailer).
This makes for an interesting character to explore with loads of potential for interesting game mechanics. Some capabilities are new in the new trailer, while less was also shown in the old trailer from last year.
Development is still in progress for Black Myth: Wukong – this trailer is basically a message from the developers saying, “Don’t worry, it’s here!” Stay tuned for more news about the game in 2021.
